NASCAR Announces Point System Changes

Tuesday January 20, 2004
It's official! The "playoff" format that many had feared has come true. NASCAR announced today that starting this year after 26 races the top ten and anyone within 400 points of the lead will have their points reset to 5,050 for the leader, 5,045 for second and so on subtracting five points all the way back down.

NASCAR swears that this is NOT a playoff and that every race is still the SuperBowl? Bull! Determining the champion based solely on those last ten races are clearly what the majority of fans and drivers said that they didn't want. Thanks NASCAR for screwing up a points system that produced incredible points battles in two out of three series. It wasn't broke, but they felt the need to "fix" it.

Here is the official announcement straight from the source at NASCAR Online.
